今年，當以往最受投資銀行青睞的沃頓、芝加哥、哥倫比亞商學院的MBA們畢業的時候，這些天之驕子們卻發現他們想進入投資銀行工作的難度比往年大大增加了，除了因為經濟不景氣以外，還有一個主要原因是他們有了一個雖然年輕卻很強大的對手──金融工程碩士，MFE（Master in Financial Engineering）﹗
到底什麼是金融工程？筆者抱著疑惑透過E-mail咨詢了畢業于加州巴爾克利大學哈斯商學院的劉華先生。劉華畢業于上海財經大學會計系，在某著名跨國公司作了幾年財務工作后，發現自己並不喜歡這種工作，他想進入更具挑戰性的金融領域。然而沒有相關學歷，想找到金融方面的工作談何容易。于是，劉華打算申請MBA，在考完GMAT后，他發現加州巴爾克利大學哈斯商學院除了提供MBA學位外，還提供MFE金融工程碩士學位，而且只需一年即可獲得學位。于是他抱著試一試的念頭申請了MFE，為了增加自己的機會，他參加了GRE數學Sub考試。本來他沒抱太大希望，沒想到當年MBA申請競爭異常激烈，雖然他的GMAT成績和工作背景都相當優秀，但他所申請的幾所商學院MBA全都遭拒絕。而當收到巴爾克利大學MFE的錄取通知的時候，他坦言驚訝大于歡喜。經過一年高強度的學習，再經過激烈的應徵競爭，雖然面臨著經濟不振的壓力，劉華還是獲得了美菱、摩爾根史丹尼、雷曼兄弟、所羅門史密斯等著名投資銀行的青睞。劉華選擇了在摩爾根史丹尼銀行舊金山分部從事金融衍生物交易的工作。他說，雖然沒能進入他最向往的高盛公司，他對現下的工作仍然十分滿意，他坦言現下的工作是在一年多以前所不敢想像的。以下是筆者得到的關於金融工程的介紹。

金融工程在不同的大學有不同的名稱︰Financial Engineering， Financial Mathematics，Mathematical Finance，Computational Finance , 然而無論是叫金融工程，金融數學，數學金融還是計算金融，它們的實質都是一樣的──it represents the emerging discipline wherein mathematical tools are used to model financial markets and solve problems in finance，即以數學工具來建立金融市場模型和解決金融問題的新興學科。近年來，由於金融創新層出不窮，金融市場發展得越來越複雜，在以往道統的股票和債券上發展出了期貨、期權等一系列新型投資工具，這就是通常所說的金融衍生物。而如何對這些金融衍生物進行定價，是投資銀行所面臨的一個難題。同時，由於金融投資工具的複雜化，一些基金管理公司越來越感到道統的投資模式難以保持基金的高成長率，他們需要設計出更加高級的投資組合來獲得盈利。因此，他們大量需要那些既通曉金融市場又有數學應用能力的複合型人才，而這樣的人才在市場上極為稀缺。金融工程就是為了培養這樣的人才而產生的。金融工程是一門綜合了金融學、數學和計算機科學的交叉學科，其課程通常由大學的商學院、數學系和工程學院聯合授課，其課程由於集中于金融領域，所以深度遠遠超過MBA金融方面的課程，通常包括股票市場分析、投資組合分析、期貨和期權、資產定價、資本預算、固定收益分析、利率模型、金融風險管理等課程。金融工程碩士的學習時間一般為全日製1年，同MBA一樣，是一種頭班教育（Professional Education）而非學術研究教育（Academic Research Education），因此無需撰寫碩士論文。其全部課程均圍繞金融學的應用展開，具有實用性很強的特點，最適合那些立志于從事金融工作的年輕人。在美國，持有金融工程碩士學位的人才在市場上炙手可熱，基本上全部被各大投資銀行、基金管理公司、保險公司、風險投資公司所聘用。
MFE和MBA有什麼不同？MBA是一種泛面商科教育，而MFE則是專門培養高級金融人才的專項教育。金融工程碩士的課程全部集中于金融領域，如果你感興趣的是會計、市場營銷或人力資源管理，那你應該是去學習MBA課程，因為MBA的課程更廣泛。此外，申請金融工程碩士不需要有工作經驗，這和MBA有很大不同，但是，申請金融工程碩士要求申請者在大學本科必須修過兩門課──微積分和統計，因此不適合那些大學學文科的人們。最後，MFE的學習是一年，而MBA由於課程覆蓋面廣而通常需要兩年。
據筆者了解，現下，已經有不少美國大學開設了金融工程的課程，如加州巴爾克利大學、普林斯頓大學、史丹佛大學、芝加哥大學、哥倫比亞大學、康奈爾大學、密西根安阿伯大學、卡耐基梅隆大學、紐約大學、南加州大學等等。除美國外，有英國的牛津大學和愛丁堡大學，加拿大的多倫多大學和約克大學，等等。亞洲的國家中，新加坡作為東南亞金融中心走在了前列，新加坡國立大學和南洋理工學院都開設了相應的課程。更多的大學可以查看國際金融工程師聯合會IAFE (International Association of Financial Engineers) 的網址，其中有各所開設MFE課程的大學的鏈接，網址是︰http://www.iafe.org/educate/fe_schools.ihtml

我在美國學MFE（金融工程）
看了“全美最熱門的學位MFE──金融工程碩士”有點話想說。
首先，學商的人除了GMAT外，建議以去考GRE的SUB. 呵呵,俺現下就是FE的。數學學得極其痛苦，別的不說，單是國內學過的probability在這邊就是按數學系的標準來上的。每堂課的作業有10題，呵呵，至少要做兩天。下學期還有stochastic，statistics和numerator method。連金融都是mathematical finance，用的書是John Hull的Future, option and other derivatives，數學要求挺大的。剛來的第2個星期就有人轉MBA了，俺也在考慮當中。另︰就業也不見得好，經濟情勢一不好，什麼都差，別聽人瞎扯。
If you are admitted, you may be required to take something like: calculus (1-3), Linear Algebra. But few schools will admit you until you show them the ability in Math. Yes, my bachelor background is business, but I have taken most of those required courses before.
It is also very competitive to apply. Although some schools may require GMAT, most of others require GRE. And it is very important to get a high score in your undergraduate math: calculus, probability and linear algebra, or you had better take GRE math SUB to prove your ability. Though working experience is not required, it is recommended. And it is almost impossible to get scholarship.
就業目前還是不行,連個internship都只有80%的人能找到。美國的經濟一不景氣就什麼都不行，當地人都找不到工作了，更何況是國際學生。今年有一個中國學生畢業，到現下還在謀職。

You guys may go to the official website of UC Berkley whose MFE is very top in USA, it says:" it is very hard to get a job for international student." By the way, this sentence has been there for 4 years!
But generally, MFE has competitive advantage over MBA, just because all business schools produce bunches of MBA, the number of MBA is far more than MFE. Also, MBA it very general, but MFE dig deeply into financial analysis.
